Product Review: Horizon Evolve 5 Folding Elliptical

Horizon Evolve 5 Folding Elliptical

The Horizon Evolve E-5 is a welcome addition to the folding elliptical category.  The low step up height and limited incline settings allow this elliptical to be useful in settings with limited overhead clearance.  The frame is very easy to fold.  Coupled with the notably quiet performance of this machine, it will appeal to those who need to include their elliptical trainer in a multi-use space.

Construction:

The construction and feel of the Horizon E-5 is surprisingly solid, especially for a foldable machine.  It is rated for users up to 300 lbs. and will suit a range of heights, making it a strong option for multi-user households.
The Horizon E-5 also features comfortable ergonomic extras. These include large, contoured foot pedals, contour grip handlebars, and an integrated water bottle holder. This increases its appeal for long training sessions.

Features:

The console and integrated features perform solidly but are not high-end.  The MP-3 input and Passport integration capability provide some on-board entertainment options.  The console also lets you program pre-set workouts for multiple users. You can set up preprogrammed training programs and heart rate monitor integration.
ViaFit integration is another user-friendly upgrade that makes it easy to track your workouts with apps and social media. Users who truly prioritize console features, would be better off considering higher end models, including the Horizon Elite E-9, though at the trade-off of a non-folding design.
The 23-pound flywheel and 20-inch stride length have the capacity to provide a challenging cardiovascular workout for most users.  Those who wish to increase their range of motion with a larger stride length and incline capability should consider other options, such as the E-9.

Training:

Athletes who wish to use their elliptical for cross training and warm-ups/cool-downs will find that the E-5 meets their needs, with the added benefit of leaving plenty of room in the home gym for free weights and plyo-boxes.  Most users who are looking for a solid workout for cardiovascular health will also get what they need from this machine.  Those who use their elliptical machine for strength targeted training may be disappointed by the limited adjustability (incline and stride length) and limited console features offered by the E-5.

Warranty:

The competitive warranty includes lifetime coverage of the frame, 3 years on parts, and 1 year on parts and labor.  The performance of the Horizon E-5 stacks up well against both folding and non-folding residential machines in the same price range.  The small footprint and solid performance make this machine a real winner for cross-training athletes conserving space in their home gym and those who need their workout to fit within the footprint of their living space.
